Azores

Date

2023 & 2024

Location

Azores, Portugal

The Azores, a Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, have a rich and fascinating history. These volcanic islands were likely known to ancient Mediterranean civilizations but remained uninhabited until the Portuguese discovered them in the early 15th century. The first islands, including Santa Maria and São Miguel, were officially discovered around 1427 during the Age of Exploration under Prince Henry the Navigator.

The Portuguese began colonizing the islands in the 1430s, bringing settlers from mainland Portugal as well as animals and crops. The Azores quickly became an important stopover for transatlantic voyages due to their strategic location. Over centuries, they played a role in the trade of goods such as oranges, sugar, and wine, as well as in whaling industries.

During conflicts such as the Portuguese succession crisis and the Napoleonic Wars, the Azores served as strategic military bases. In the 20th century, their importance grew with the advent of transatlantic aviation and communications. Today, the Azores are a self-governing autonomous region of Portugal, celebrated for their natural beauty, geothermal activity, and rich cultural heritage.

Whaling was a significant industry in the Azores from the 18th to the mid-20th century, driven by the islands' strategic location along migratory routes of sperm whales. While traditional whaling has ceased, the Azores now celebrate their whaling heritage through museums and have transitioned to sustainable whale watching as a major tourist attraction.
